Ayurveda,
a 5000 year-old medical discipline,
focuses on the five elements:
ether, air, fire, earth, and water;
and the three humors: vata, pitta
and kapha
Health is the equilibrium of the
humors and disease is their imbalance.
From the point of view of individual
humors, there are two states for
a humor viz. normal and abnormal.
The normal state is conducive
to health and the abnormal state
causes disease. The abnormality
of a humor may be expressed in
quantitative and qualitative levels.
Increase and decrease humors are
changes in quantity. Denature
of humor is a qualitative abnormality.
Increase and denature of humors
cause abnormal functions whereas
their decrease causes reduced
function or lack of function.
Health is not mearly the absence
of disease. Disease free condition
is the best source of virtue,
wealth, gratification and emancipation.
While the diseases are destroyers
of these, welfare and life itself.
Ayurvedic practitioners achieve
ideal health with herbs, massage,
oils, nutrition, exercise, yoga
and meditation.. Ayurveda relies
completely on herbs & natural
substances to heal.
Ayurveda is a complete way of
life. It is about preventing disease,
curing ailments and promoting
health. The goal of ayurveda is
to achieve harmony and balance.
Promotive aspects of Ayurveda
is termed as Rasayana.
By
rasayana treatment one attains
Longevity. Memory, Intelligence,
Freedom from diseases, youthful
age, excellence of lusture, complexion
and voice, optimum strength of
physique and sense organs, suceesful
words, respectability and brilliance.
It also enhances ojus.
Immunity is an important factor
in keeping the body and mind healthy.
The immunity factor is identified
by Ayurveda superior factor occurring
at the optimal functioning of
all the tissues. This is termed
as Ojas. This factor may get depleted,
denatured or dislocated due to
various etiologic factors. These
states cause disease. Ayurveda
considers that Ojas is responsible
for checking and curing diseases.
Ayurvedic
diagnosis and treatment much depend
on the individual patient. Individuals
vary much in physical and mental
constitution, of course in the
range of generality. A good physician
should take into consideration
of such individual variations
to diagnose and treat his patients.
If a physician overlooks such
details, it may cause failure
of treatment and even adverse
reactions may occur
Ayurvedic pharmacology is different
from the modern pharmacology.
Modern pharmacology looks for
the active principles of drugs
and their specific actions on
various systems. On the other
hand ayurvedic pharmacology is
describing the holistic effects
of drugs in relation with the
other basic principles of Ayurveda.
Nevertheless there are many similarities
too. The action of a drug does
not change simply because we have
different interpretations for
the action. Hence an emetic used
in Ayurveda will be emetic according
to modern pharmacology also
Global proliferation
of Aayurveda
Presently
Ayurveda is in a state of global
proliferation. Many nations have
already recognized as
one
of the important alternative system.
Ayurveda is recognized by the
World Health Organization,
and is currently used by 70-80
% of the Indian population. Modern
Hi- tech medicine is very essential
for all types of emergency cases,
ranging from accidents to heart
attacks, chronic degenerative
disease still elude any solution.
